Over the past several months the Buffalo State Newman Center has been discerning their future as the Buffalo State Newman building was identified to be sold with the majority of funding going to help towards the Chapter 11 settlement for the Diocese.
Bishop Mike throughout this entire process has shared that the ministry of the Newman center must and will continue, although it will look different.
With the Bishop’s guidance in mind, the leadership team of Buffalo State Newman has been discerning their future and what it would look like. After numerous meetings and exploring the options of moving Buffalo State Newman ministry onto the campus of Buffalo State or moving the ministry into Assumption parish, the leadership team met with Assumptions Parish council to discuss a plan to move forward together.
Buffalo State Newman will celebrate their last mass in their ministry center on Sunday, May 19 at 9:30 am. Any who are interested are welcome to join. On the following two weekends of May 26 and June 2, Buffalo State Newman will come together with Assumption parish at their 10 am mass to celebrate liturgy together. Immediately following both liturgies there will be a social and open house of the space that Buffalo State Newman will be using so the communities can get to know one another.
Details of how Catholic Community of Buffalo North and the Buffalo State Newman Community at Assumption as part of family #36 are still being worked out. As more details become available they will be shared with you moving forward.
Please pray for this transition, join for the opening liturgies of these communities and take advantage of the opportunities we can share in together, providing not only for our respective Family of Parishes, but also for the students at Buffalo State who take advantage of Newman ministries. As part of this transition, the campus minister for Buffalo State Newman, Austin Reinhart will have an office in the rectory of Assumption.
May the Holy Spirit guide all that we are doing.
Keep smiling 😊
Fr. Bryan Zielenieski
Vicar for Renewal and Development, Diocese of Buffalo
